The largest companies in Spain have an important influence on the country and the world economy. The top 35 publicly traded companies in Spain, which make up the IBEX 35 index, are presented here along with their activities, logos, sectors and useful links.

In Spain, companies must be, or become a Sociedad Anónima, abbreviated SA, which means “anonymous corporations”, to be listed on the Madrid Stock Exchange. Although they must comply with the rules of the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), listed companies have the right to receive capital from investors who buy their shares.

The IBEX 35 index

To facilitate understanding of the evolution of the Spanish stock market and the economy in general, the shares of the 35 largest companies by market capitalization are aggregated in the IBEX 35 index or CAC (which means Spanish Stock Index), which is the stock market benchmark index of Spain.

Revised twice a year, the IBEX 35 is a capitalization-weighted index, in which the shares of the 35 component companies are weighted according to the total market value of their outstanding shares. Larger companies by market capitalization weigh more in the index than smaller ones.

The real-time trading of the IBEX 35 index can be followed with convenient graphical tools from various sources, including the Madrid Stock Exchange, Google Finance, Yahoo Finance, Bloomberg, etc.
